Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog millionaire is a film about a teen from Mumbai, India called 'Jamal', who goes on the Indian version of 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' hoping that his childhood friend 'Latika' is watching the show. Because of his low status of being from the 'slums' Jamal is arrested under suspension of cheating. From Jamal's interrogation from the police the audience realizes that its Jamal's life experience with his brother and Latika that helps him win this game show.

Before and after the film myself and my class discussed the representation and narrative within the film. To help use used the film our teacher showed our class a website that showed interviews of Danny Boyle (the director) answering questions about the making of the film.
This is the website we used in our class dicussions:
http://www.filmeducation.org/slumdogmillionaire/interview.html

Here are the questions Danny Boyle answered in his interviews:

From watching these interviews I've learnt that filming in busy cities such as Mumbai is a problem for film  producers and directors as they have to improvise with their surroundings and put camera men on skates and roller blades so its easier for them move from one place to another. I also learnt that at least one Bollywood film that is released each week falls under UK's top 10 films.

One question we discussed in class is 'What perspectives of life in India does the film offer?'
The film shows how life in the slums of India is a daily struggle for many of its people but also shows how the children still try to enjoy their childhood despite their environment. The film also show how without a good male role model orphan boys in India either end of as beggars or as thugs. Whereas, orphan girls end up in the music industry and are control by men.

As a class we also watched a YouTube clip of Danny Boyle winning an award for 'best director' for Slumdof Millionaire.
